Did you know that in 1913 Belfast was the centre of the suffrage movement in Ireland?
Come join us for a journey back in time when women couldn't vote in political elections as we delve into the fascinating history of the Belfast Suffragettes. Learn about the courageous women who came to Belfast to campaign for the right to vote and the ones who went to England and Scotland to do the same. If you wondered what your great granny was doing in Belfast in the 1910's you might just find out as this walking tour tells the story of the Suffragettes in Belfast, those women who the newspapers called "well-dressed hooligans"!
'Glitz, Glam and a bit of Gossip'
On this tour you'll learn about some of the glitz and glam of the women of Belfast with a wee bit of gossip thrown in to boot!
You'll hear about:
The original Irish 'It' girl with a connection to Belfast
The jewellery bought by an exiled King for his mistress which ended up here in Belfast

'Not Just a Typist with a Webley': Winifred Carney Walking Tour
Very often portrayed simply as the ‘typist with the webley’, Winifred Carney was so much more. She straddles an incredibly interesting period of Belfast’s history as a trade unionist, suffragist, revolutionary, and lifelong champion of working-class women. This walking tour explores the places connected to her remarkable life from her early involvement in the trade union movement to her participation in the 1916 Rising to her later life as an advocate for workers’ rights.
This is the story of a woman beyond the familiar revolutionary portrait. Discover the contradictions that made her life far more complicated and far more interesting than the labels suggest.
