'Not just a Typist with a webley':Winifred Carney Walking Tour

Women of Belfast Walking Tour

Saturday 21st November 11AM

Wee Walks Belfast

She features on some of my other tours but her life was so interesting I felt she deserved a tour of her own.

Very often portrayed simply as the ‘typist with the webley’, Winifred Carney was so much more. She straddles an incredibly interesting period of Belfast’s history as a trade unionist, suffragist, revolutionary, and lifelong champion of working-class women. This walking tour explores the places connected to her remarkable life from her early involvement in the trade union movement to her participation in the 1916 Rising to her later life as an advocate for workers’ rights.

This is the story of a woman beyond the familiar revolutionary portrait. Discover the contradictions that made her life far more complicated and far more interesting than the labels suggest.

You think you know Winifred Carney? You haven't heard her side of the story...
